In 2005 Barbara fell and fractured her knee cap. She was in a cast which went from mid-heel to mid-thigh and since she could not wear her regular socks her toes were freezing. She decided to knit herself a couple pairs of socks with buttons up the sides so she could wear them open over the cast and closed after the cast came off. Now she wear them just because she likes them!

This sock has a box heel without a gusset which makes setting up the rib pattern a snap after turning the heel.
